UCDC wants internship providers and students to have positive, mutually beneficial experiences. Early communication allows UCDC to clarify expectations, support problem-solving, and help prevent manageable concerns from becoming larger problems.

Contact UCDC When
  • The student’s responsibilities, schedule, work arrangement, supervisor, or internship status changes substantially.
  • The student is not meeting performance, attendance, communication, or conduct expectations.
  • The organization is considering ending or substantially reducing the internship.
  • A workplace closure, staffing change, security issue, or other disruption affects the internship.
  • A student raises a concern involving supervision, safety, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, accommodations, or inappropriate conduct.
  • The supervisor is uncertain how UCDC academic or program requirements apply.
Responding to Performance Concerns
  • Discuss the concern directly with the student when appropriate.
  • Use specific examples and explain the expected standard.
  • Identify what improvement is needed and establish a reasonable timeframe.
  • Document significant or recurring concerns.
  • Contact UCDC early for consultation and support.

Except in situations involving serious misconduct, safety, or legal concerns, we ask internship providers to contact UCDC before terminating a student’s internship.
