The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) is a rapidly growing Washington, DC based organization of over 190 academic institutions and other organizations from around the world engaged in addressing global health challenges. CUGH was established in 2008 with generous funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation.

The mission of the International Cancer Expert Corps (ICEC) is to reduce mortality and improve the quality of life for people with cancer in low- and middle-income countries, as well as the indigenous and geographically underserved populations in upper-income countries and regions worldwide. The ICEC addresses this mission through a mentoring network of cancer professionals who work with local and regional in-country groups to develop and sustain expertise for better cancer care.

The UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) is a research network comprised of scholars from across the University of California and the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories who produce and use research to help build a more peaceful, prosperous world. Our focus is on challenges that have the potential to lead to wide-scale conflict, and that can benefit from global cooperation to solve.

The Government and Community Relations (GCR) department serves as the primary liaison between UC San Diego and federal, state and local government entities on issues affecting higher education, research and health care. GCR also fosters relationships between the university and community groups and leaders to create a positive impact on our region and around the world.

Students earn 13 credits while in residence in Washington, D.C. Students extern 448 hours over the semester and attend class twice a week. Placements include a wide range of offerings, including federal, state and local government agencies, private non-profits and judicial chambers. Placements provide an opportunity for substantive legal work under a lawyer’s supervision with regular feedback and mentorship.
