Brittney Vevaina: UC Berkeley ‘13, UCDC Spring ‘13
1. Tell us what you do:
I am an associate manager at the Partnership for Public Service, a nonpartisan, nonprofit dedicated to making our federal government more effective for the American people. In my role, I manage programs designed to help prepare new political and career executives to succeed.
2. What made you want to return to Washington after graduation?
D.C. has an exciting energy that drew me back to it. I appreciate how easy is it to walk around the city and experience different cultures, try new food, and listen to live music. I have been back in D.C. for almost three years now, and I am still learning more about the city and all it has to offer.
3. What did you learn during your term in Washington that helped you in your career?
During my internship with the United Nations Information Center, I attended events every day—from Capitol Hill hearings to briefings at various think tanks. I did not feel comfortable networking at first, but quickly learned how to meet other professionals and give an effective “elevator speech.” It was a great way to learn about many of the different organizations in D.C. and helped me start building my network.
4. What’s your favorite UCDC memory?
While I was interning, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon came to visit D.C. to meet with President Obama. The day of their meeting, we had the opportunity to take an early morning tour of some of the national monuments with him, including the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. It was an incredible experience to meet the Secretary-General and one that I will never forget!
