David Do: Merced '08 UCDC Fall '08
1. Tell us what you do:
I run the Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs for Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of Asian-American and Pacific Islanders in the District of Columbia through outreach and advocacy. In this role, I work on a variety of issues including education, health, housing, small businesses, among others. I also play a role in diplomatic relations with AAPI ambassadors and diplomatic missions. The office, which distributes grants to non-profits that provide service to the community, has a $1.2 million budget and a staff of 10. We also hire interns from colleges around the country, including UCDC.
2. What made you want to return to Washington after graduation? I technically never moved.
I have stayed in the District since leaving UC Merced to participate in the UCDC program. If you asked me during my time at the Washington Center if I would end up in DC I would probably have said no. Now I consider it home and love it.
3. What did you learn during your term in Washington that helped you in your career?
I learned that important policy work can be done locally. Local actions and policy decisions affect people immediately. I enjoy delivering results quickly for the communities that I serve.
4. What’s your favorite UCDC memory?
Traveling with UCDC friends to New York City for the first-time to enjoy the world famous Thanksgiving Day Parade.
