AI Policy and Implications

Course Title: Understanding AI: Capabilities, Limitations, and Impact

Day & Time: Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 

This course introduces students to the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence and its implications for work, creativity, and society. Students explore how AI technologies such as large language models, vision systems, and image and video generators are transforming access to knowledge and reshaping industries. Emphasizing equity, innovation, and critical reflection, the course examines AI’s potential to drive positive change while addressing its societal challenges. No programming experience is required, as students use accessible tools to develop applied and ethical insights.

About the instructor

James O'Brien

Dr. James F. O'Brien is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests include computer graphics, computer animation, simulations of physical systems, human perception, rendering, image synthesis, machine learning, virtual reality, digital privacy, and the forensic analysis of images and video.
