Fall Term FAQ

When will UCDC know if its building will open in the fall?

The decision on whether to open the building will be made by the UC Office of the President in consultation with public health experts. Providing a safe environment requires a decline in the spread of the COVID virus and the ability to test and care for anyone who becomes ill.

We hope that a decision can be made by the end of June. We recognize the need for students to make arrangements well in advance. We also need more information regarding the availability of tests, the spread of the virus, and both federal and local restrictions. We will update you regularly.

Should I buy plane tickets?

We advise waiting unless you can find a fully refundable fare. You will have plenty of time to purchase tickets after a decision is made.

Will I need to make a housing deposit?

We will not require a deposit or ask you to sign a housing contract until we are able to announce that the building is open.

What restrictions will be in place if the building opens?

That depends on the spread of the virus, local regulations, and the recommendations of public health officials. Social distancing rules imposed on campus will be similarly enforced in Washington, including mandatory masks and no outside guests. Events including orientation, guest speakers, and perhaps classes, are likely to be offered remotely.

Should I enroll in classes on my home campus?

Yes. We recommend you register for classes offered by your campus as a backup.

Can I defer and come to Washington a different term?

That is a campus-by-campus decision. Please consult with your UCDC campus coordinator to discuss options.

Will internships be available?

Yes. We have a database of over 1,000 sites, the overwhelming majority of which are government agencies, advocacy groups and non-profit organizations that count on the contribution of interns. We expect variation in how organizations respond to the pandemic. Some may be unable to accommodate interns, while others my rely even more heavily on intern contributions.

When will I receive information regarding classes and roommate assignments?

We will send you further details on the fall term, including instructions on course registration, roommate pairings and travel, immediately after a decision is made to open the building.

Is spending a term in Washington worth it under these circumstances?

That’s a personal decision. Washington, one of the world’s most interesting, vibrant and policy-obsessed cities, is unlikely to be operating full speed. Many events, in addition to internships and classes, may be remote. However, the same could likely be said for your campus. In a best-case scenario, most businesses and offices will be operating close to normal, and the November election will provide a fascinating backdrop. A more likely scenario is a partial opening, with worksites, restaurants and bars operating under social distancing restrictions, universal use of masks, and regular testing. Internships will continue to provide invaluable career preparation.

Whom should I contact if I have further questions?

Your campus coordinator and Washington-based program administrator – who will contact you in the next few days -- can answer your questions or direct you to the appropriate person. If you are not sure who to ask, you may also send queries to Internship@ucdc.edu
