Course Title: Black Tricontintentalism: Global South Solidarities through Film
Day and Time:
Students will study examples of Black-led transcontinental solidarity in the 20th century and compare them with solidarity movements against neocolonialism which are taking place in Washington, DC today. In the first half of the quarter, through a combination of film screenings and readings, we will examine several examples of transcontinental solidarity in the 20th century, with a focus on independence movements of the 1960s.
In the second half of the quarter, through a combination of film screenings, guest speakers, and events in the city, we will examine current international solidarity movements led by organizations in DC such as Code Pink, the Black Alliance for Peace, Pan African Community Action, and the Palestinian Youth Movement. We will study these organizations' current campaigns to get US military out of Venezuela and Haiti, and attend a rally or other event related to these issues. For their final project, students will create a video essay comparing a historical independence movement with a current struggle against neocolonialism taking place in Washington, DC
