Community Organizing
Course Title: Confronting Over-Policing in Washington, DC
Day and Time:
Students will study the efforts of community organizers to combat the over-policing of working-class communities in the nation's capital. They will study recent movements such as those by Black Lives Matter, the policies they fought for, and the rollbacks which followed with policies such as the Secure DC Act.
Each group of students will be assigned one organization working on this issue such as Harriet's Wildest Dreams, Free DC, and the Stop Police Terror Project. Each group will follow the organizing efforts of their assigned organization for several weeks, and will attend 2-3 of their community actions. Each group will present on the campaigns and strategies employed by each organization and the outcomes. We will compare these strategies' effectiveness as a class
Lishan Az
Lishan AZ is a multi-disciplinary artist working in immersive installation, interactive media, photography and film. She explores themes of home, intimacy, and interiority. Her work revives lost narratives in order to contextualize contemporary issues and discover/recover possibilities for our present condition. She is currently an assistant professor of cinema and digital media at the University of California, Davis.
