State Department
and Defense Internships
Students may apply to intern at the Department of State or for the Department
of Defense at the Pentagon in Washington. State and defense department
interns are regular participants in the Washington Program. All of the
information about academic credit, housing, and other items is the same.
However, deadlines for these programs are
earlier than for the regular program because of the need to satisfy a
SIX MONTH security clearance. The deadlines
for State and Defense Department applications are as follows:
- Summer 2005 Deadline: Nov 1, 2004 (PASSED)
- Fall 2005 Deadline: March 1, 2005
- Winter 2006 Deadline: July 1, 2005
- INTERNSHIPS NOT AVAILABLE FOR SPRING QUARTER

for more information
- Students interested in the State or Defense
Department internships must return to the university as an undergraduate
for at least one quarter following the internship.
Students also may apply for a State or Defense internship overseas.
These have their advantages and attractions. However, since students
are on their own overseas, regular academic credit cannot be earned
through the Washington Program. One option is to enroll through the
Department of Political Science for between 5 and 6 units to be earned
through a series of assignments to be completed and transmitted through
the Web and e-mail. Students also may set up their own independent
studies with other UCD faculty. For more information on this option,
please contact the Department of Political Science for further information.
