University of California Congressional Fellowship Program
Background The University of California Congressional Fellowship (UCCF) was created to encourage more UC students to learn about public service by interning in congressional offices during their time in Washington. The University of California has had internships programs in DC for decades and students from across the UC system have made their mark throughout Washington DC for their intelligence, work ethic and ambition. The fellowship will continue to extend this same talent and energy to Capitol Hill. By providing additional support (a financial award, training and networking opportunities), the UCCF program will also help connect UC congressional fellows to issues that impact the University.
Why work on the Hill? Interns are an essential part of Capitol Hill, and students working there gain a perspective of the legislative system, public affairs, as well as the inner-workings of Congress. Congressional interns also learn professional networking and communication skills that will help them throughout their lives. Interns are the face of a congressional office and they deal with constituents on the phone and in person on a regular basis. While each office is unique in assigning responsibilities and intern experiences will differ, congressional interns generally attend hearings and staff briefings, handle constituent calls, and write correspondence. The goal of the UCCF program is to involve congressional fellows, who are working in key offices, in policy-related tasks as well.
