Music Composition Seminar

UCDC Extends an Invitation to Undergraduate Students to Participate in a Music Composition Course with Pulitzer-Prize-Winning Composer Roger Reynolds

This Winter ’14 academic term, the University of California, Washington Center (UCDC) is offering an upper division music composition seminar with Pulitzer-Prize-winning composer, Roger Reynolds. For the first time this course is open to students from outside the University of California System. Students participate in small, seminar style class sessions with Professor Reynolds and encouraged to work with their fellow participants on projects. Under Professor Reynolds tutelage, students create a new composition as a final project. A selection of these compositions will be performed by a professional group in a public concert at the end of the term. Last session, student compositions were performed by the noted, New York string quartet JACK in a public performance at the National Gallery of Art. JACK will again be participating this term.

Participation in this music composition program has had a strong impact on the students who have participated in recent years. Indeed, the outcome of previous offerings of this course have been varied and impressive. Past participant C Dobey (UC San Diego) remarks, “Being able to interact directly with the JACK quartet was most important for my education as a musician and composer!” Another past participant, P Ahmadi (UC Davis) exclaims “I cannot say enough good things about Roger Reynolds! The amount of time he spent personally helping students is absolutely incredible!”

This course is scheduled to meet on Thursday evenings from 6 - 9PM starting on January 9, 2014 and running through March 13, 2014. The course is hosted at the University of California, Washington Center (UCDC) located in downtown Washington, DC at 1608 Rhode Island Ave., NW close by both Metro’s Red and Blue/Orange lines. Tuition for this course is $1,706.
