Government by the People in California: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

On October 28, 2005, the UC Washington Center hosted a one day conference of policy experts and practitioners who addressed the national implications of the November 8, 2005 special election in California and its effect upon Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s political future and reform agenda. Voters confronted a range of crucial concerns from abortion to the state budget, prescription drugs, campaign finance, redistricting, teacher tenure, and electricity regulation.

The conference includes four ninety minute sessions on topics such as:

  • Overview: Government by the People
  • The Policy: Gerrymandered Districts and Budget Deficits
  • The Politics: Campaigns, Consultants & Money
  • Implications for Governance
