This thematic research seminar explores the history of Congress—the first branch under the Constitution—and its role in making public policy, as well as other issues in contemporary politics and government. The subject matter will cover the relationship between Congress and the Presidency, the organization and operation of Congress, and the emergence of a highly polarized electorate and government. The course is also designed to provide students with a balanced understanding of the broader political process and the political environment in Washington. For the WINTER Quarter 2018, there will be a special on the results of the 2018 midterm election and the organization and early activities of the House of Representatives and Senate in 2019.
