Residential Telephones
Local telephone service is provided as part of the rent. There is one active
phone line in each bedroom to be shared with your roommate. You will need to
bring your own telephone and answering machine from home. Long distance phone
calls will need to be made with a calling card. Public telephones are available
for your use on the first floor. You are welcome to bring your own cellular
phone, however, you will need a local phone number for any food deliveries.
Each bedroom has two telephone and data port wall plates. Each wall plate has
three outlets (2 telephone and 1 data). A unique identifying number that consists
of the suite number and bedroom/wall suffix identifies each wall plate. To find
the live telephone outlet, locate the wall plate in your bedroom with a bedroom/wall
suffix ending in 2. For instance, in suite 908 you would look for
the wall plate 908 A-2 or 908 B-2
Note: The network jack is live to ALL outlet plates. There is telephone
service available on outlets with a bedroom/wall suffix ending in 2.
To hook-up your telephone: - Plug your telephone into the top voice jack
in the outlet.
- Lift the receiver to verify that you have dial tone. If you are getting dial
tone, you can verify your number by dialing 8-1-1. An automated voice will tell
you the number of your telephone.
- If you have problems with your telephone dial tone, you can report these
for service via the Maintenance Request form available at the Security Desk
in the Lobby or the Residential Life Office on the 4th floor.
All but local calling is restricted on this telephone line:
If you wish to make a long distance call, you can either call collect or use
a telephone calling card.
Use the last 4 digits to dial anywhere inside the building:
To call within the building, dont use 9 but dial the last
four digits of your telephone number (for example use 1212 for 202-587-1212).
Dial 9 to get an outside line:
To call outside the building (local, collect, 800 or calling card), dial 9
and then the number. Be sure to include a 1 after the 9
for all long distance or 800 calls.
Troubleshooting Tips:
- If the top voice jack does not work, try plugging your telephone into
the middle jack, also a voice jack.
- Some models of cordless telephone do not work with the buildings
residential telephone service. If you encounter this problem, try switching
to a corded telephone. <<<
